Woolworths has confirmed that from 31 December, 2015 you will no longer be able to earn Qantas Points while shopping at Woolworths.
The news came in a preview website of the new program. On the Woolworths Rewards website, Woolworths provided the following statement:
We asked members what they really want from a rewards program, and
the answer was clear — money off their shopping. So, we changed points
for Woolworths Dollars.
With Woolworths Rewards, you enjoy more relevant benefits than ever
before. And because life’s busy enough, we designed it so that
everything happens automatically. No vouchers. No admin. No hassle.
Simply scan your Woolworths Rewards card at the checkout in-store, or
login when shopping with Woolworths online, and the rewards will take
care of themselves.
In its place is a new scheme, which will offer an automatic discount at the cash register. Basically, you will collect Woolworths Dollars by buying selected products. Once you have accumulated 10 Woolworths Dollars, you will be entitled to a $10 discount at the register.
The move away from a scheme based on Qantas Points to a discount scheme has been widely tipped over the last week, It even resulted in Qantas sending emails to members saying they were still in discussion with Woolworths.
Woolworths and Qantas announced the partnership in mid-2009, and so it has been going for 6 years. In that time Woolworths has helped grow the Qantas Frequent Flyer membership to over 11 million. However, Woolworths have been though to be unhappy with the cost – they have been reported to be spending $80 million per year buying the Qantas Points they were giving away.
