It’s the announcement many have been waiting for – the extension of the partnership between Virgin Australia and South African Airways. The partnership has been extended to allow members of the two airlines’ respective Frequent Flyer programs to earn and burn on each others flights. In addition to the points, Velocity members will also earn status credits when flying SAA.
Double Points Offer
As is often the case with the announcement of a new partner, double points are up for grabs for those taking eligible flights. This promotion allows you to earn double Points in Economy and Business Class. You will need to register online by 9 May 2015, and travel on an eligible Virgin Australia and South African Airways flight between 16 May and 31 July 2015.
The earn rate is shown in the following table:
The other side of the coin is redeeming points. With the new partnership, Velocity points can be redeemed for flights with South African Airways.
The redemption charts have been updated, and, unfortunately, South African Airways flights are found using the more expensive redemption schedules (shared with the likes of Singapore Airlines and Air New Zealand).
The partnership allows for the recognition of the status of each airlines members. The most visible of this is the anility of Gold and Platinum Velocity members to access to South African Airways lounges. There are a few wrinkles with this, in that some airports, such as Perth, are not included in the benefits. This is likely due to South African using the Qantas Club lounge in Perth.
The lounges that are available include a range of domestic and international lounges on the South African Airways network includes Baobab Premium Class Lounges in Johannesburg (domestic and
international), Cape Town, Durban, Port Elizabeth and East London, Lagos (Nigeria), Harare (Zimbabwe) and Lusaka (Zambia).
Additional benefits include priority check-in and increased baggage allowance.
