Members of the Velocity Frequent Flyer program can now earn status credits and points when travelling with Alitalia. As part of a reciprocal agreement with Alitalia, members of MilleMiglia will be able to earn Miles on all Virgin Australia domestic, short and long haul international services.
Earning Points and Status Credits
The first change is that Velocity members will be able to earn Points and Status Credits on eligible Alitalia flights. Do note that some of the deepest Discount Economy fare classes earn Points but do not appear as Status Credit earning classes. The Points earning rate is published on the Velocity site, and shown below.
The table shows a fairly standard structure with the more expensive fares generally earning more points.
As for Status Credits, the Alitalia earn rate follows the standard structure for Velocity. The mapping for the fare classes is:
Alitalia Status Credit fare classes
- Discount Economy: N, S, Q, X
- Full fare Economy:Â Y, B, M, H, K, V, T
- Premium Economy: P, A
- Business/First: J, C, D, I, E
This follows the points earning mappings, although the Deep Discounted fares shown in the Points Earn table, but not in the status credit earnings chart.
Alitalia are offering Velocity Gold and Platinum members travelling on Alitalia service access to a range of elite benefits. These include access to Alitalia lounges across Italy (in Catania, Rome, Milan, Naples and Venice) and in New York. In addition, such members are being offered priority check in and priority boarding.
Silver and above members are eligible for an increased checked baggage allowance
Velocity members will also be able to redeem for award flights on Alitalia. Fortunately, Velocity are using the more generous Table 1 of the two redemption tables for Alitalia. The redemption table is shown below:
On the downside, at present redemptions with Velocity Points are only available by calling the Membership Contact Centre – Alitalia redemptions are not available online.
