Once again, Qantas are offering 5 Qantas Points per dollar spent on Qantas Gift Vouchers. The offer is valid for Gift Vouchers purchased between between 1 December and 31 December 2016.
The promotion has been a popular end of year promotion for Qantas. In the past, Qantas has offered a bonus of 10 points per dollar. However, last year the rate reduced to 5 points per dollar, and it seems this will be the new norm.
Having said that, the purchase of a Gift Voucher does not normally earn points on the purchase. In this light, the offer of 5 points per dollar can be seen to be a bit of a bonus.
Vouchers come with their own set of terms and conditions, so it is worth ensuring that you are familiar with these. Some of the important points to keep in mind are:
- Flights must be simple one way or return flights departing from Australia. No multi-city bookings, or itineraries originating outside Australia can be made
- They can only be used against paid fares – you can’t use them for payment of taxes on Award flights.
- You need to specify up front how many people will be travelling together on the ticket
Is it worth it?
In the days of 10 points per dollar, is was worth stocking up on vouchers. At 5 points per dollar, it is bit less of a sure thing. If you have immediate bookings to make, then it is perhaps a no-brainer.
On the other hand, if you have no immediate need, then it comes down to whether you will be able to use them through 2017. The vouchers have a ‘shelf-life’ of twelve months, so you would need to used them within twelve months of purchase. In that time, you would need to consider that you are basically storing your cash with Qantas – and you may need to consider how much you are willing to have stored away like this.
