Hilton Honors are running a promotion on points purchases. Under the offer, you can earn a bonus of up to 100% on the number of points that you purchase.
The 100% bonus is applicable when making a purchase of over 5,000 points. If you are buying less than 5,000 points, then there are no bonus points.
The bonus is valid for purchases of points made between now and 3 May, 2017.
Normally, Hilton Honors sell their points for 1 (US) cent each, so under the promotion, this will come down to 0.5 cents each. The maximum purchase will thus get you a total of 160,000 points for an outlay of $US800, which at the time of writing was close to $1,100 Australian.
Under the Hilton Honors terms, you can buy up to 80,000 Hilton Honors in any given year. If you were to buy the full 80,000 points, you would get a total of 160,000 points added to your account.
The main reason for purchasing points is to top up your points balance. You may want to do this if you are short of points. However, given you can purchase 80,000 points, it does allow you to buy points to claim an Award night outright.
You do need to run through the maths to determine whether or not you are better taking an Award room, or purchasing a normal revenue room. Hotel Room prices can move around a bit, so even at a specific hotel, the answer may depend on just what days you are looking at.
