Enrich, the loyalty program of Malaysia Airlines has announced that it will be discontinuing the 15% discount on Award redemptions made online. The discount, which has been in place since 2009, will no longer be offered from 1 August, 2016.
This represents another loss in value of Enrich redemptions. It follows a significant reduction in redemption value in February last year. In that points devaluation, members in Australia were facing some significant increases in points requirements for tickets out of Australia.
The changes possibly reflect continuing belt tightening at Malaysia Airlines. It does, however, introduces some interesting anomolies into the Award schedule. For example, there are cases where redemptions on Malaysia Airlines will be more expensive than a redemption on a OneWorld partner airline. While the 15% discount could reduce the price of the Malaysia redemption to less than the partner redemption, this will no longer be the case.
An example of this can be seen when comparing the redemption chart for Malaysia Airlines against the chart for OneWorld partners.A Zone 5 Business Redemption is 132,000 points on a partner airline, whereas the best that can be achieved on Malaysia Airlines is 150,000 points.
Malaysia Airlines are suggesting that their ongoing redemption specials will make up for the loss of this discount. This would be the only way that some of the new anomolies could be addresses.
While the change does not seem to be widely published online at this point. Malaysia Airlines have published a FAQ here.
