Cathay reducing number of seats made available to OneWorld partners?

On Sunday, and article appeared online in the South China Morning Post, that discussed possible changes to the way Award flights are released on Cathay Pacific. According to the article, a review underway within Cathay Pacific is looking at reducing the number of Award seats made available to its oneWorld partner airlines. This will allow it to have more award seat availability for its own members.

The article quotes a Cathay Pacific spokesman, stating “A review is under way to ensure our programme continues to meet the
changing needs of our members and is competitive with the loyalty clubs
of other major global airlines.”

At the heart of the issue is the availibilty of Award flights  on Cathay Pacific. Nn many cases, it is more cost effective to redeem a Cathay Pacific flight through a partner airlines, such as American Airlines, for a lower cost than can be done through Cathays Marco Polo or Asia Miles schemes.

If you are a member of a program, such as Qantas Frequent Flyer, and have an eye on Cathay Pacific redemptions, then this is a development that is worth keeping an eye on.
